Spinal Manipulation

The main goal of spinal manipulation by our chiropractors is to restore or enhance joint function.
We perform spinal manipulation to resolve joint inflammation and to reduce pain. Spinal adjustment is the most important aspect of your chiropractic care. Our doctors use a variety of adjustment techniques to help realign your spine and restore optimal function of the nervous system.

All new patients begin their care with a consultation with one of our doctors. During your initial no charge consultation our new patients have the opportunity to discuss their health concerns with the doctor. This gives our doctors the opportunity to decide if chiropractic can best help your particular condition.

Following the initial consultation, your doctor will perform a specific orthopedic and neurological examination in addition to a traditional medical assessment. Your doctor will also perform a series of tests that are specific to chiropractic care. We also have a digital x-ray machine to further enhance the quality of your examination.

During your examination the doctor may be able to uncover an irritation to your nervous system. Every single function that your body performs including pain has a neurological component. It is common to note increased or decreased muscular tone in our chiropractic patients. We often find that chronic problems will result in muscular spasms or perhaps even muscular atrophy. The connective tissues such as ligaments and tendons including the intervertebral discs could be substantially damaged. Left untreated, it is common to see destructive wear and tear in the spine as well as the joints of the extremities.

A loss of normal mobility is one of the most common findings associated with the typical chiropractic patient. Our goal through spinal manipulation is to restore that mobility to help you feel better.

Intersegmental Traction

Intersegmental traction is an effective chiropractic therapy that facilitates passive motion into the spine for the purpose of stretching the spinal joints to increase mobility. Intersegmental traction helps to gently and effectively reestablish normal range of motion to your spine. It also helps to relax the muscles and reduce muscular hypertonicity. One of the primary side effects of pain is muscular contraction and reduced mobility.

Intersegmental traction is delivered through the use of a specialized traction table. The patient lays down on the table in a supine (on your back) position. There is a three wheeled cam just under the surface of the table that rotates on an axis while it simultaneously works its way up and down the length of your spine.

As the rollers are working their way up and down the spine the individual vertebra are gently massaged and tractioned thus elongating and stretching the spinal joints and muscles. As the restrictions are being reduced, the muscles begin to relax and the spinal pain is reduced. Because the intervertebral discs are avascular (without circulation) it is critical that they have the
ability to move within their specific boundaries. This allows the disc to attract the nutritional fluids it needs to stay healthy. Retaining and improving spinal range of motion is critical in the preservation of good health and good function.

Intersegmental traction is non-invasive and typically painless. Most of our patients find this particular therapy to be relaxing and very helpful in the treatment of their spinal conditions. The gentle rolling action is restful, exercising the spine without effort. During a typical therapeutic session, the intersegmental roller table interacts with your body in a massage like fashion
literally hundreds of times.

Intersegmental traction is a particularly effective when used in conjunction with another chiropractic treatment such as spinal adjustments. The traction will help increase mobility, reduce muscle tension and spinal misalignment. The pumping action facilitates increases in blood flow and oxygen to the discs, ligaments and muscles. This helps the patients with improving balance, coordination, strength and mobility.

Therapeutic Exercise

Often times the bridge between success or not in our clinic is developing therapeutic exercises for our patients. Therapeutic exercises refer to a wide range of physical activities that focuses on restoring and maintaining strength, endurance, flexibility, stability and balance. The goal of introducing therapeutic exercises to our patients is to return an injured patient to a fully functioning, pain-free state.

Our therapist has advanced degrees in exercise science and exercise physiology. After conducting an evaluation of the individual’s physical capabilities and reviewing the medical history the therapist and the doctor will shape a treatment plan. Your treatment plan will include an exercise program that is appropriate for each individual’s needs. Our doctors and the therapist will monitor your progress and modify your plan as you begin to recover.

The objective of your treatment blending spinal care from your chiropractor with exercise is to help the body reduce pain and inflammation. Once this is achieved, the exercise program focuses on regaining range of motion and rebuilding your muscle strength and endurance.

Therapeutic exercises that may be included in a patient’s treatment include:

• Strengthening Exercises – Usually performed with heavy resistance and fewer repetitions.

• Endurance Exercises – Engage large muscle groups over a longer period of time.

• Flexibility Exercises – Achieved through stretching and movement patterns.

• Balance and Coordination Exercises – Focus on maintain an individual’s center of gravity.

With time and repetition our patients should be able to return to performing their activities of daily living. Improving mobility and pain free joints and muscles are typical. Another benefit of receiving care in our clinic is improving circulation and a reduction in overall rigidity. Your balance and coordination will improve as your overall health and vitality is enhanced.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Interferential current (or IFC) is a specific electro therapy that is utilized commonly by our therapists. The IFC machine produces an electrical current that passes through the affected area of the patient. This is not the same thing as a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (or TENS) unit as the IFC tends to penetrate deeper and has a number of physiological effects that have therapeutic value which include:

• An increase in localized blood flow which can improve healing by reducing swelling. This is achieved as the increased volume of blood can take the edematous fluid with it. This results in removing damaged tissue and facilitating a natural healing in the injured area.

• The stimulation of local nerve cells can have a pain reducing analgesic effect. Different frequencies of stimulation results in your body’s release of pain reducing endorphins to help treat lower-back pain as well as other areas.

• Utilizing electrical current will create muscular contraction which might be inhibited by local injury or swelling. We have found IFC very beneficial to improve limitations in active range of motion and to reduce muscular hypertonicity.

The patient should not feel any discomfort from the application of the interferential current. During the treatment the patient will feel a tingling sensation at the contact area. Most of our patients describe this sensation as a pleasant feeling. We always strive to maintain the intensity of the treatment at a comfortable level and never should the intensity be so high as to be uncomfortable. The tingling sensation may continue for a brief period following the treatment.

Vibration Massage

Vibration massage can be performed by a therapist or with an electronic device. In this massage stroke, the body part or muscle is shaken, using light to firm pressure. The shaking can be much more vigorous if an electronic device designed specifically for the purpose is utilized. Vibrational massage can be applied to any part of the body that can receive other massage strokes. Relaxation Vibration techniques usually come at the end of a massage session, and are used to further relax the client and stimulate the blood flow once more before the recipient gets off the massage table. The vibration movement both relaxes the underlying muscles and creates a body-wide sense of relaxation.

Vibration massage is also used to provide the recipient with a sense of invigoration. Vibrational massage when performed at the end of the session leaves clients feeling less groggy when they get off the table. Light vibration can be performed before a sporting event to stimulate the blood flow and leave the athlete feeling a sense of energy.

The basic idea of tennis ball massage, or any massage with any kind of ball, is to apply specific pressure to a stiff or aching spot in a muscle by trapping it between your body and something else: usually the floor, sometimes a wall, or another body part (or a few other creative options like the back of the couch, the bottom of the bathtub, and so on). The point is to use the ball to reach spots that you simply can’t get to with your hands, and every other kind of tool massage is a variation on this theme.

What To Expect

Our goal once you’ve made contact with our office is to provide you with the top chiropractor customer service with a real concern for you as an individual. You will be greeted by a warm and genuinely friendly voice when making your first appointment and each visit after that. You will feel welcomed and appreciated as one of our patients.

Our office is modern with great attention placed on your comforts and needs. All new chiropractic patients begin their care with a consultation with the doctor. During the consultation our doctor will allow you to tell your story. The doctor will then ask you a series of questions regarding your health problems. This will allow our doctor to make an honest determination if
you have a condition that modern chiropractic treatment can help.

If you are a candidate for evaluation, our doctor will proceed with an appropriate examination. This examination will include an assessment of your overall health followed by specific neurological and orthopedic tests. Our doctor will also include specific tests that are unique to chiropractic care. If your history, age and condition warrants x-ray examination, then we will do that as well. Not all patients receive x-ray examination, however we do use a high frequency digital system that is modern and limits the amount of exposure to the patient. Once we have the results of your examination, a report of finding is given to the patient. We want you to better understand your specific problems, so that you and your family can make good decisions about what is necessary to help you to feel better.

At the center of our treatment plan is the spinal adjustment. We utilize a variety of techniques to realign the spine and to restore function. Most patients are pleasantly surprised at the gentle nature of these adjustments. We follow a strict protocol each time the patient is here so that you can be assured that you are receiving exact and very specific corrections.

Often times we will also use a variety of physical therapy modalities following the adjustments. These physical therapy techniques are designed to reduce your pain and muscle tension as quickly as possible. We will also encourage specific range of motion and flexibility exercises. Our doctors and therapists will encourage healthy lifestyle choices from drinking enough water, to managing your diet and stress and getting enough rest.

Your treatment plan may last from a few weeks to several months. Natural conservative healthcare takes time and repetition to be effective. Your doctor will monitor your progress and will perform periodic progress evaluations. You will always be informed about your current status and what the clear next steps will be going forward.
